Come share your ideas, props, and presentations with others looking to strengthen pack membership. Ben Buckelew and James Brown will also cover the new cooperative effort with the Girl Scouts program. We will have a full slate so come on time and we'll stay until we finish.

If you plan to attend the Youth Protection training that same night, be sure another representative from your pack can attend Roundtable.

Certification Saturday (I believe) is only offered once a year. This is a GREAT way for you to be GOLDEN in the eyes of the boys. Shooting sports are really popular, and if YOU are the one trained as a Rangemaster, you have the power !

I never did the Memorial Day flag-placing but I've heard it's overwhelmingly fabulous. Bring doughnuts and a camera! They say it's very moving to see the boys place a flag, salute, and move to the next grave. I understand the whole thing is over quickly since there are so many participants. The people at the cemetery in Marietta instruct the boys on what to do. Just show up. It must be a sight to see!

Come be trained to operate Council and/or District archery or BB ranges (be aware that "archery and BB gun shooting are not to be done at the pack level" -Shooting Sports for Cub Scouting). Choose between Archery and Air Rifles or CPR (CPR is an all day course). Registration must be made by April 28, 2006 and no exceptions or walk-ins! Make checks payable to "Atlanta Area Council". Scout Night at the Braves

It's baseball time! Scout Night at the Braves will be on Tuesday, May 2nd against the Colorado Rockies. Reserve your tickets today through the program center, as they will most likely sell out. Tickets are $5 for outfield seats and $12 for behind homeplate in the upper level. The Braves have given us better seats this year that is in reserved seating so purchase your group tickets at the same time to get seating together and be sure to come early to parade around the field. Go Braves!

Why go to Wood Badge?

Every youth deserves a trained leader. As a Wood Badge trained leader, you will be better prepared to serve your Scouts.

Wood Badge is the premier adult leadership-training program for the Boy Scouts of America. It teaches contemporary leadership and team development skills in an outdoor setting. Wood Badge helps you become a better leader. It's fun, it's rewarding and you meet new friends.

What about outdoors skills?

Wood Badge does not teach outdoor skills. You only need basic camping skills to be successful at Wood Badge. Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters must complete Introduction to Outdoor Leaders Skills before attending Wood Badge. Outdoor Leader training is recommended (but not required) for all others.

DISTRICT PINEWOOD DERBY RACE THIS SUNDAY Registration 2:00, race at 3:00 p.m.

The following message is from Chris Turner, Cubmaster at Pack 266 -- the pack that is hosting the race.

While the official registration deadline for the District Pinewood Derby has passed, we will still accept entries through Friday, March 17th. If you are not registered in advance, you cannot race on Sunday! Registrations need to be submitted by the individual racer, not a pack leader...so please make sure this is passed along to the winners!!!

Plan to arrive at Dunwoody UMC, 1548 Mt. Vernon Road by 2:00 pm on Sunday the 19th for check-in and inspection. Races will begin at 3:00 and should last around one hour. (There will be snacks available, so bring your $$$ to support the host, Pack 266!)

HIGHTOWER TRAIL DISTRICT CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP - "Knights of the HIghtower Trail" June 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Oglethorper University

Go to the website and download a flyer, registration form, and health form. (They're not posted yet, but should be up very soon.) The cost is $45. per camper for boys of 5-day volunteers, $85. if you get your form in by April 10, and $110. if the form is in by May 7. NEW this year -- Webelos Quest. Webelos scouts will be able to choose the achievements they want.

PLEASE PROMOTE THE CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP in your pack any way you can. If you would like Karen to come and make a presentation, just ask. Her info is below.

Keep in mind that each pack MUST send one full-time 5-day volunteer for each 4 boys. If you or your den's parents can't volunteer for five days, Karen Zeliff has some alternative ways that everyone can help -- (setting up the camp, breaking down the camp, "temp" work in the carpool line, etc.)

Karen presented a supply list that she would like for people to collect -- wrapping paper rolls, empty Capri Sun pouches, rubber cement, aluminum foil and much much more. That list will be posted on the website soon too. Please start saving these supplies.

Sean Austin has compiled a list of topics that will be discussed at each Roundtable. In addition, he will spend 10 minutes or so going over the official topic for the month. Both the discussion and the topic for the month will be emailed out a week or so in advance so that you can encourage others to come share and learn.

April's discussion will be "Summer Pack Activities" and the theme is "Our Feathered Friends."

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Troop 528 is being brought back from retirement. After a few years dormancy, Troop 528 will be revived - back to its former glory.

I was sent this notice about the park directly across the street from the church where Roundtable is held. If you have any leaders who are interested in this park this would be a good opportunity to come. Also, if you can spare an hour or so on Saturday, bring your scouts, some tools, work gloves, etc. and come on down!

NO PUBLIC MEETING on the parking lot & similar traffic plans has yet

been scheduled. The blue/white flags that have appeared on the

property are from a surveyor getting all the site details so the design

can be done with accurate topo and other features located.

The WORKDAY announced in the last NBCA Newsletter will proceed as

scheduled:

Saturday, MARCH 11, starting at 9:30 am

RSVP: If you decide last minute, just come. But if you and your

neighbors are planning to be there, please send me an e-mail now so

that we'll have some idea how many to expect and I can let you know

next week what tools are going to be most useful. THANKS! There's

undoubtedly ivy trying to re-grow up some trees. <clippers> We had

hoped to do some restoration planting on the streambank, but the

English ivy there is being slow to succumb to herbicide. We have a

number of native plants waiting to be planted on the streambank, so we

may prepare a "nursery" bed for them elsewhere. <shovels / hoes /

trowels / wheelbarrows>. There may or may not be any trail work.

north of and across from Briarcliff Methodist church. That church is

probably the best place to park if you come by car. Please arrive to

hear the 9:30 am instructions on what is to be done.

bring: Connie will have some tools, but if you like your own tools,

they could be helpful.

prepare: Dress appropriately for the hazards of the site: rough

terrain, poison ivy, some briars. Long pants, long sleeves and gloves

are highly recommended.

will be going to the World Jamboree.

Paul Porwoll, the Chair of the FOS Committee says that this should be a "banner year" for FOS. Please "talk it up" before your pack's FOS presentation.

DISTRICT BANQUET, Sunday, March 5
THIS IS NOT JUST FOR DISTRICT FOLKS, but for any of us "Scouters" in the district. Come honor the adult volunteers who make Scouting possible. Deadline for reservations is February 25 (after that the price goes up.) I've attached a flyer if you need one.

DISTRICT PINEWOOD DERBY RACE, Sunday, March 19
Pack 266, at Dunwoody UMC is hosting the official race. The top three finishers from our pack will go on to the district. Registration is at 2:00 p.m. -- Race is at 3:00 p.m. You should have already received a separate email with all the details. We are grateful to Chris Turner and all the scouts at Pack 266 for hosting this fun event another year.

SPORTSMAN SHOW, COBB GALLERIA, Saturday February 11
Brent Allen told us about this cool event. There will be a "Wildlife Safari Tour" at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., with a snake show, by the highly recommended Steve Scruggs at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Contact Brent for more information: iballen@mindspring.com

Brent brought coupons tonight that allow kids to get in free and parents pay half price ($5.) What a deal!

Everyone who has seen the Steve Scruggs show has said he is mesmerizing and totally cool. He has LOTS of poisonous snakes and apparently handles them very well! If you have time this Saturday, take advantage of this outing!

TRAINING
Warren Martin, the Training Chair for our district, was at Roundtable tonight and says the reason he only does training once a year is that there has not been interest. BALOO TRAINING
The COUNCIL (again, not the district) is offering BALOO Training (Basic Outdoor Leader Training) at Lake Alatoona on March 25. I couldn't find any info on the Council website, so you might want to call the Volunteer Service Center: (770) 989-8820.

Also, go to the Hightower Trail District website http://www.hightowertrailbsa.com/ and check out other councils who offer all training on a regular basis. (ie: the Milton District is doing a BALOO training in September.)

JIM SPOTTS WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT
Jim did a delightful presentation on the theme for the month of April, "Fish and Wildlife Management." He talked about birdhouses, bird watching and feeding. In fact, he offered to do a bird house building workshop if you are interested. He means it, he's a very active Scouter: jkspotts@bellsouth.net

Of course you are ENCOURAGED to come to Roundtable, the second Tuesday of every month (except Valentine's Day!) at 7:30 p.m. at the Briarcliff United Methodist Church.

Last night's Roundtable included a treat! John Ewing led the combined (Boy Scout and Cub Scout) Roundtable in his famous "Boom Chicka Boom" song -- complete with new verses. It was hilarious.

On the Cub side we discussed topics for future Roundtable meetings.

CUB AQUATICS DAY, Lakeside High, Sunday, January 29 (not Superbowl Sunday) from 1-4 p.m.

This is a great time for the boys to swim in the winter and earn achievements. In order for the organizers to plan for lifeguards it's important to sign up as soon as possible. The boys really love this event! This will be a combined Boy Scout/Cub Scout event for "Webelos to Scouts Crossover" as the topic.

Hightower Trail District Awards Banquet
Mark your calendars! The 7th Annual Hightower Trail District Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday, March 5 at Dunwoody United Methodist Church. Time is 5:30 - 8:00 PM, with dinner beginning at 6:00. Just as pack meetings and courts of honor recognize our Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, the annual district banquet recognizes those adult leaders who've made a real difference to their unit and the district. All adult leaders - from packs, troops, crews, and the district - are invited to come together in this wonderful night of fellowship. Leaders receiving the Trailblazer, District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver awards will be recognized. Cost is $15 for reservations received by February 25; $20 after that date. A very limited number of dinners will be available at the door (first come, first served).
